Founded in 2018 by multimedia artist Lao Cai, our brand has dedicated itself to transforming discarded materials into stylish, sustainable, and truly one-of-a-kind bags. From old denim and flour sacks to coffee sacks and even bicycle tires, we take what others throw away and give it a new purpose—and a new story.

The Inspiration Behind Mirror Zoo

Lao Cai’s vision for Mirror Zoo began during his time studying art and design in Europe. There, he saw how innovative designers were upcycling materials into fresh, contemporary products. This sparked an idea: what if we could bring this philosophy to China, where the fast fashion industry generates immense waste, and instead, turn discarded materials into something not only functional but beautiful?

This idea became the foundation for Mirror Zoo’s mission—transforming waste into artfully crafted bags that are as original as they are environmentally responsible.

Why Upcycling Makes a Difference

While recycling helps reduce waste, it’s only one part of the sustainability puzzle. Recycling often requires breaking down materials, consuming energy and resources in the process. Upcycling, however, allows us to work with existing materials in their current state. It’s a more efficient, eco-friendly way of creating new products while keeping waste out of landfills.

By upcycling materials like flour sacks, denim, billboards, and even bicycle inner tubes, we’re not only cutting down on waste but also reducing the environmental impact of producing new materials from scratch. This approach allows us to offer eco-conscious products without sacrificing quality or style.
